“Light” — even a half moon still shines
New Age · Calm & Relax Seoul · South Korea Physicist · Composer

By day, a physics graduate student who studies materials using light. After a long run of failed experiments and one half moon seen from a bus window, TK wrote a song for anyone who needs a few minutes of calm.

Light, as a subject

Before light became the inspiration for a piece of music, it was part of TK’s everyday life. A graduate student in physics in South Korea, TK researches the properties of materials using light.

The road was not an easy one. Experiments failed again and again, and results were slow to come. In a lab, failure doesn’t always arrive with a dramatic moment. Sometimes it simply means trying again, day after day, until the tiredness builds up and confidence in the future starts to waver.

In the image on the right, light reveals a fascinating phenomenon: when white light passes through a glass prism, each colour is bent at a slightly different angle. What looked like a single light breaks into a whole spectrum of colours — colours that were there all along, hidden in white.

The last bus home

One night, after a late experiment, TK rode the last bus home. On the way, a memory surfaced from a trip to Hong Kong: at Victoria Harbour, a cruise boat had passed by, playing an old song.

TK put on headphones and began to listen to the song. At the line where the moon stood for the heart, TK looked up at the sky. The moon was only half lit, yet its image seemed to match exactly what TK felt that night.

It was a simple moment, but one that stayed close to the heart. From it came the wish to make music that reaches people and offers them a little quiet and comfort — the same comfort TK had found in that song.

On the hardest day, half a moon looked like something missing.

Seen from the bus window, the half moon was sad — a shape with a piece gone, like the way things felt after months of experiments that would not work.

Later, the same shape read differently: half of it was lit.

Not much has been achieved yet, TK says, and more failures may come. But the feeling from the very beginning is slowly coming back — and TK keeps going. That is what hope looks like here.

한강Han River

A river that gives your thoughts room

When TK needs some quiet, the place to go is the bank of the Han River in Seoul. There, in one of the parks by the water, TK finds a spot to step away for a few moments from the rush of the city and the worries of everyday life.

The river is so wide that simply looking across to the other bank gives a sense of freedom. The light breeze, the moving water and the open space make it easy to let your thoughts settle. You don’t have to do anything in particular. You can just watch, enjoy the quiet, and leave with a clearer mind and a slightly lighter heart.

Light

“Light” is the opening track of Light & Dark, the music project composed by TK and released in 2026. The cover captures a few blossoming trees in front of a building, their shadows laid across the grass between rays of sunlight. A simple but telling image, reflecting the contrast between light and dark.

The creative process was a long one. Some passages were rewritten dozens of times, while others, after whole days of work, were abandoned and rebuilt from scratch. It was a process much like the experiments in the lab, where every attempt brings a new perspective. The hours of work were demanding, but also deeply rewarding.

TK’s music sets out to offer a moment of calm in the middle of everyday rush. It can be heard on the way home after a long day, or in a pause when you feel the need to step away from your worries and relax.

“Light” can also be heard on FMV FIT Radio, in the Calm & Relax selection, dedicated to moments of relaxation and balance.

Interview

In conversation with TK

Eight questions that reveal the story behind TK’s music: the night it all began, the way a physicist understands light, the calm found on the bank of a river, and a sincere message of encouragement for anyone going through difficult times.

01 What inspired “Light”?

I’m a graduate student in physics in Korea, and in the lab I study the properties of materials using light. For a long time, my experiments kept failing, and little by little I became exhausted and afraid of the future. One night, I was riding the last bus home after a late experiment, and I suddenly remembered a trip to Hong Kong. At Victoria Harbour, a cruise boat had passed by playing “The Moon Represents My Heart”. I played the song through my headphones, and when I heard the line about the moon representing my heart, I looked up at the sky. The moon was only half full. Somehow, it felt exactly like my heart at that moment. That simple moment stayed with me and reminded me how deeply music can reach someone.

Since that night, I’ve wanted to create music that can bring comfort to someone simply by listening, just as that song comforted me.

02 What does light mean to you?

Light is what I study every day, and it is also the word that reminds me of the half moon I saw from the bus window on my hardest day. That night the half moon made me sad, but now I see it differently: a half moon still shines. That is how I see hope. There is still a lot I haven’t achieved, and I may fail many more times, but I’m slowly finding again the feeling I had when I first started, and I keep going.

03 Is there a memory hidden in “Light” — something you hope listeners might discover?

The half moon outside the bus window, and the moment I finally let go of everything I had been holding in. If listeners discover anything in it, I hope it is that small, quiet relief — and the thought that even half a moon gives light.

04 Did making music help you find some peace?

Yes. Making a beautiful melody was much harder than I expected, but strangely I enjoyed every hour of it. When “Light” was finished, I listened to it again and again and slowly found a calm I had forgotten for a long time — and the strength to go back to the lab and keep experimenting. My situation didn’t suddenly get better; experiments still fail and I still feel anxious sometimes. But instead of fearing everything, I now want to try once more.

05 Where do you find your quiet moments?

One of my favorite places to find a quiet moment is by the Han River in Seoul. I love sitting in a park along the river, feeling the gentle breeze and watching the water flow by. The river is so wide that just looking out across it gives me a sense of space and freedom. It’s a perfect place to let my mind wander, do nothing for a while, or simply sort through my thoughts. I often find that these peaceful moments help me clear my mind and feel a little lighter.

06 What would you say to someone going through a difficult moment?

Listening to “Light” won’t solve anyone’s problems right away. But on the way home after a long day, or in a short break after a hard one, I hope it brings a few minutes of calm — a moment to set things down, the way music did for me on that bus.

07 What has your creative journey taught you?

Composing turned out to be a lot like experimenting. I rewrote parts dozens of times, and sometimes started over from the beginning after days of thinking. I learned that failure is part of the process, and that I don’t have to be afraid of everything — I can try one more time. I also learned that effort alone doesn’t guarantee success, so I don’t want to tell anyone that it does. What matters to me is being able to rest for a moment, and then keep going.

08 Is there a message you would like to send to listeners around the world?

Everyone carries their own worries — work, studies, relationships, the future. If you are going through a hard time, I hope “Light” gives you a little room to breathe, and that you find a small hope wherever you are.

Even a half moon still shines.

For the way home

Wherever you are, a little light.

“Light” will not fix anything on its own, and TK would be the first to say so. But on a late ride home, or in the short pause after a difficult day, it can hold a few minutes of calm. If it has been playing while you read, you already know what that feels like.
